What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

Assistive technology refers to devices and services that are used to increase, maintain, or improve a person's ability to function. Some examples of assistive technology are:

We can help you with information, ideas and equipment, if:

You have a permanent or temporary (accident or illness related) disability;

You want help dealing with limitations you are experiencing as you get older;

A family member needs either kind of help;

You work with people with disabilities, in healthcare or education;

You work with seniors who may need help;

Your company creates products for people with disabilities or seniors;

You work in human resources, case management or advocacy;

You have some used equipment to donate.

If you need assistance with getting around, speaking, hearing, seeing or other basic daily functions, NEAT can help.

We have resources, from used mobility equipment to recent articles and catalogs of useful products. We have a Computer Lab where you can try out assistive hardware and software. We offer a regular schedule of events from workshops to product demonstrations, to help you learn more about what is available to make life easier for you. Our Equipment Restoration Center accepts donations of used equipment and offers clean, repaired equipment for sale at greatly reduced prices. (Return to next item in "How we can help")

Many people find that, as they get older, they can't do things the same way they used to. If you find it harder to read small type, open jars, get out of chairs, hear conversations, remember to take pills, or just to move around, NEAT can help.

We have lots of resources available, including catalogs of useful products that make life easier. We hold seminars and expos where you can come learn about new products, and see or try them for yourself. We have a center that sells gently used equipment and a computer lab, too, if you want to try out special hardware or software. (Return to next item in "How we can help")

It can be stressful, and very time-consuming, to have a family member with a disability or age-related limitations, but NEAT can help.

We have resources, from used mobility equipment to recent articles and catalogs of useful products. We offer a regular schedule of events, from workshops to product demonstrations, to help you learn more about what is available to make life easier for your loved ones and for you. Our Equipment Restoration Center accepts donations of used equipment and offers cleaned, repaired equipment for sale at greatly reduced prices. (Return to next item in "How we can help")

If you work as a healthcare provider, therapist or an educator, then you know how difficult it is to keep up with the latest products and services for people with disabilities. NEAT can help.

We have gathered resources together for you, from the latest models of mobility equipment to recent articles and catalogs of useful products. We have a computer lab where you, and your clients or students, can try out assistive hardware and software. We offer a regular schedule of events, from workshops to product demonstrations, to help you learn more about what is available to make life easier for the people you serve. And, our Equipment Restoration Center accepts donations of used equipment and offers cleaned, repaired equipment at greatly reduced rates. (Return to next item in "How we can help")

Many people working with seniors want to encourage them to stay independent as long as possible, and NEAT can help.

We have lots of resources available, including catalogs of useful products that make life easier. We conduct seminars and hold product demonstrations and expos where you can learn about what's new. We have a center that sells gently used equipment, and a computer lab, too, if you want to try out special hardware or software. (Return to next item in "How we can help")

If your organization designs products or creates environments for people with disabilities, or wants to tap this growing market as the Baby Boom ages, NEAT can help.

We offer you opportunities to talk to and conduct market research with people with disabilities of all types. You can test software, web sites and products in our Computer Lab. You can exhibit at our expos, conduct training in our seminar rooms, and be listed in our resource service. We also offer corporate memberships and sponsorship opportunities. (Return to next item in "How we can help")

If you work in human resources, case management or advocacy, then you know how difficult it is to keep up with the latest products and equipment for people with disabilities. NEAT can help.

We have gathered resources together for you, from the latest models of mobility equipment to recent articles and catalogs of useful products. If you have used durable medical equipment that is no longer needed, from wheelchairs to lifts, NEAT can help.

We will schedule a free pick-up of your used equipment. We will give you a receipt for tax purposes. Then, we will clean, repair, restore and inventory the equipment, so that someone else who needs it can buy it at a huge discount. ABOUT US

NEAT is about access: access to information, to products and equipment, and to the manufacturers and vendors of equipment. The New England Assistive Technology (NEAT) Marketplace was formed because limited access to equipment and devices that can minimize the effects of disabilities is, in itself, a disability.

NEAT was established to provide information and access to equipment and devices that can change the lives of people of all ages, with all types of disabilities, both temporary and permanent. We operate under the auspices of The Connecticut Institute for the Blind/Oak Hill, a 109 year old non-profit organization located in Hartford, CT.

NEAT began as a pilot project in 1999 with funding from CIB/Oak Hill. In 2000, the CT Department of Social Services provided start-up funding for the Equipment Restoration Center component of the project. Within just a few months, it became obvious how important the services we offered were to people with disabilities, their families and the individuals who work with them. We reached over 18,000 people during the pilot phase - in audiences, individually, over the phone and via the Internet.

The new headquarters building of the NEAT Marketplace provides 25,000 square feet of space for product demonstrations, expos, classes, computer use, research and equipment restoration. Our staff is available to help you find what you need.

NEAT is open Monday to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm and the first Saturday of every month from 9:00am-2:00pm. Other hours by special arrangement.

Consult the Calendar for our scheduled events.

Please contact us for information by calling (866) 526-4492 toll free in Connecticut or (860) 243-2869 in the Hartford area. You can also email us at info@neatmarketplace.org, or contact our staff at the email addresses listed below.

Our really NEAT staff:

Lee Learson, Director, is responsible for developing, coordinating, scheduling and supervising all programs and activities of the NEAT Marketplace. Before coming to Connecticut, Lee developed and operated the Recycled Equipment Marketplace in New Hampshire. Previously, she ran an information and referral center, created a national database, directed a project to train seniors and consulted nationally – all activities focused on assistive technology. Lee can be reached by email at leelearson@neatmarketplace.org.

Don Hoerman, Equipment Manager, oversees the day-to-day operation of the Equipment Restoration Center, including equipment repairs and cleaning. He schedules pick-ups of donated equipment and works closely with our member vendors on equipment sales, producing an updated inventory every month. Prior to joining NEAT, Don was a regional sales manager at Electric Mobility Corp., where he sold Rascal* scooters and powerchairs and supervised sales reps throughout New England. Don can be reached by email at neatrestore@neatmarketplace.org.

Leslie Dauer, AT Coordinator, Leslie coordinates the computer lab, the information and resource library and volunteers; she is available for NEAT tours and computer lab demos by appointment. Leslie was a Computer Consultant, Coordinator and Instructor for various organizations including the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control, Central Connecticut State University, Manchester Community College, Goodwin College and Graphic Solutions. She assisted her clients with both PC and Mac computer systems. She has a BS in Management Information Systems. Leslie can be reached at dauerl@neatmarketplace.org

Eva Rog, Administrative Assistant, handles the day-to-day office responsibilities to keep The NEAT Marketplace running smoothly and efficiently. She organizes expos, trainings and workshops, with responsibility for vendor recruitment and the creation and distribution of our marketing materials. Eva also represents The NEAT Marketplace at local, regional, and national conferences doing networking, distribution of information, and demonstration of equipment. She has just completed her degree in Marketing.

Rebecca D. Earl, Ph.D. is President of the NEAT Marketplace and Vice President for strategic planning at CIB/Oak Hill.

COMPUTER LAB

We have 21 personal computers in NEAT's Computer Lab. Each of them is set up with hardware and software to provide alternative means of accessing the computer for people with disabilities.

These adaptations include switches of all varieties, including those that let people who cannot use their hands to move a mouse by scanning screen-based alphabetic or modified picture keyboards. Other switches work by simple head, foot or eye movements, or by breathing through a puff tube. We also have larger than usual, one-handed, and color-coded keyboards, along with touch screens, modified mice and joysticks. And more.

The Computer Lab features lots of specialized software for creating access to the computer. These programs include voice input for people who can not use keyboards, screen reading/voice output, conversion for one-handed typing, and for American Sign Language. We also have software available for instruction, for organizing assistive technology, and for transcribing print to Braille. And more.

The hardware on display ranges in price and complexity. NEAT's assistive technology specialist is available to help visitors try out equipment--essential before making purchase decisions. This gives Computer Lab users an opportunity to test alternatives and find the ones that work best for them. Comparative shopping puts consumers in a better position to contact vendors and make smart purchases.

(Click here for full list of computer access equipment available for trial in NEAT's Computer Lab.)

The Computer Lab is available by appointment, Monday to Friday 8:30am-4:30pm and the first Saturday of every month from 9:00am-2:00pm. Please contact info@neatmarketplace.org or call (860) 243-2869.

You can use NEAT's Computer Lab for evaluation. Our hardware and software are available for use by professionals who conduct individual AT evaluations to determine which specific equipment, modification and instructional formats best meet someone's needs. Please contact info@neatmarketplace.org or call (860) 243-2869 to arrange to lease the space for that purpose. NEAT's staff does not do these personal evaluations.

The Computer Lab is also available for business rental. Companies often create products, software and web sites that need to be evaluated for their accessibility to people with disabilities. NEAT makes it possible for companies to convey information about their products and services to this important market segment.

Companies lease our Computer Lab and evaluation rooms to conduct beta testing of web sites. This private setting is fully equipped with all the necessary adaptive hardware and software for testing, along with video viewing and recording capability.

NEAT also provides an accessible venue for in-depth interviews, focus groups, mini-groups and product testing. We can assist you with recruiting to ensure the participation of individuals with a wide range of disabilities. For more information, please contact info@neatmarketplace.org or call Lee Learson at (860) 243-2869.
