Using AT for Work

Discover the Possibilities for Individuals with Disabilities

NEAT, an Oak Hill Center, is pleased to be working with the CT Department of Labor American Job Centers (AJCs) in response to the Disability Employment Initiative Grant and supported by the CT Tech Act Project.

After meeting with AJCs and exploring specific needs, in regards to assistive technology (AT), an inventory of current technology needs was accessed.  NEAT has helped to upgrade and establish an AT Lending Library at both Hartford and Waterbury centers.  Each center will manage the AT supports available in their lending library in order to support the consumers they serve.  This will provide the AJCs with access to technology for demonstration and loan purposes for job seekers in the workforce system to be more competitive in the employment market.

Along with the lending library inventory, a policy and procedure system will be reviewed to create structure around demonstration and lending to consumers.

Training, instructional materials and resources will be provided, by NEAT, to the AJC staff with ongoing demonstrations and technical assistance.  These will increase staff knowledge and awareness of the application of AT in the workplace and create a stronger awareness of accessibility for individuals with disabilities.  An introduction to AT will lay the foundation for suggesting or implementing technology supports with individuals served in potential workplace settings through the AJCs.  More specifically, AJC staff will discover the possibilities that assistive technology can bring to the job search process, gaining or maintaining employment and the many accessibility concerns that should be considered.
